PURPOSE DRIVEN WORK

Do you believe that buildings in Malaysia could or should be better? Is there a need for change?

As an engineer, you have the power to shape how buildings are constructed, and it is crucial to use this influence responsibly. As Spiderman famously said, "With great power comes great responsibility." A project must turn out better, better architecture, better use of space, built better and at the right cost, because you were involved and gave your best.

This is how change happens, one project at a time.

This is precisely what we aim to accomplish at ohr - bringing about change, one project at a time.

Join us on this transformative journey. We will support your your growth and empower you to wield your influence effectively.  In our supportive environment, your presence matters, and your voice will be valued and heard.

Together, we can engage in meaningful work that makes a difference, providing you with a sense of purpose and significance. At ohr, you can experience the satisfaction of purpose-driven work. Join us.

Join me on this journey of building a firm that does work in a manner that matters, founded on good engineering and values.

your questions answered

We know that we are not a typical setup. So we have compiled answers to some of the questions you might have.

Because we are not contented with settling for the current industry norm in Malaysia. We believe we have something to contribute to Malaysia's built environment and marketplace. We are intent on making a difference and doing good work, and you have the opportunity to be part of this, be heard and leave your mark.

Read more on our foundation.

We work on a wide variety of projects and materials, and like exploring new challenges. We are not constrained by policies and red tapes. This means you get to get your hands on a whole variety of projects and learn skills that will enable to you work on any buildings project, very likely in an accelerated manner.

And in many aspects, the people you directly work with and for is more important than the firm itself. See below on how ohr is structured.

It is not intentional. We take on any projects that compensate fairly and do not require us to compromise on our values. Our portfolio seems niche because almost all of our projects are built to own, which means the project owners care about quality and producing good buildings.

In answering this question, we will also address the allure of working on tall building projects: Complex engineering comes in all shapes and sizes, not just tall buildings. In fact, the tall buildings commonly constructed in Malaysia are not at all engineeringly complex. The first 8-10 years of one's career as a consulting engineer is best spent on foundational skills that will make them a well-rounded engineer who will be able to work on all types of structure and material.

See our DNA statement on  clean and ethical living.

Yes! The firm was registered in December 2014 and the office opened in February 2015. We not only survived the Covid pandemic but grew in size. As the song goes, the only way is up!

We intend to organically grow alongside our brand and reputation. We will not chase growth for the sake of it, at the expense of our culture and values.

It is not hierarchical and rigid. You will have access to all levels and the opportunity to be heard and contribute, even on matters like how work is done. The aim is to  grow small autonomous teams that will carry the firm's DNA as we get larger.

See our DNA statement on  being people-centric.

We want to make you a well-rounded consulting engineer who will be able to see projects through from inception to completion and beyond, in all aspects. Now, that is a long game that requires patience and trust from you, and investment from us.

And you are your limit. We do not discriminate by age, gender or any of the likes. We will guide and support you along way.

See our DNA statement on  freedom and responsibility, thirst for learning and high performance.

One can never know everything, and learning is a lifelong pursuit. We are a firm that embraces these. Attitude trumps intelligence. If you have a head for engineering, we will help you grow.

See our DNA statement on  being people-centric.

Develop a passion for engineering and architecture, and delivering good quality work and buildings

Without passion for architecture and buildings, you are akin to a tailor with no interest in fashion - don’t be one.

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." Albert Einstein.

Live and breath our DNA statement, the Vision

In an industry here in Malaysia that is generally profit driven where people and producing good quality work take backstage, we are building a value driven firm. The Vision is not just words on paper, this is something we believe in, are intentional about, apply and continue to improve on.

We are salmons. We are the minority swimming upstream. This is not easy, but it doesn’t matter, we persevere, and we do it together, collectively.

Practice collectivism

At ohr, collectivism rules, not individualism. Don’t pursuit personal interest to the detriment of the team. This is why we do not have personal KPIs. Personal KPIs is different to personal development. It leads to individualistic behaviours. The latter is essential for you and for the firm, it helps you grow and we help you with this. And attitude trumps intelligence, always. Be humble: self aware and respectful, not self-involved. Be transparent: open and honest to others and yourself. Be empathetic: consider and care for others.

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” Rick Warren.

ohr is unique because it facilitates both my technical and personal growth. We are constantly striving for excellence from how we operate to the final delivery of our drawings. Such a working environment is rare to find, and I hope to remain here for the foreseeable future as I am keen to expand my knowledge and set the lead for great engineering practices without any compromise to my general wellbeing.

To me, it is more important to follow the right leader than to work in a big company. ohr is set up and operates from the knowledge, skills and experiences Yas has gained while working for world-class consulting firms in the UK. As such, the experiences you gain working at ohr are not that of a typical Malaysian firm.

Joining ohr requires being prepared for a mindset shift. Coming from a traditional Malaysian firm, I had to leave behind the old mindset of what I knew about consulting engineering and learn new ways. It is demanding but is also equally rewarding.

At ohr, our daily work as young engineers is not just limited to structural engineering design, especially working on isolated designs for large projects. We learn to undertake civil engineering design, drawing production, project management and liaison with external parties. I learned that the delivery of projects is not done in departmental silos and isolated skills-based teams. And developed an appreciation for all the aspects involved in the delivery of projects and am developing the skills needed for this alongside my design skills.

The projects are predominantly bespoke, and although small-scaled, they are architecturally complex, and such complexity is structurally demanding. Working on such projects helped me see that engineering is not a secondary service in the delivery of a building but an essential part of it, and when done right, makes a huge difference to the end product.

I have learned three things at ohr: design, documentation and drawing. The complex nature of the projects undertaken here has allowed me to appreciate and learn the technical skills required to make structures stand. Documenting calculations and verifying design are stressed upon, a good practice seldom employed in Malaysia. At ohr, engineers draw the key drawings and quality are highly emphasised, from line thickness to the colours used, which builds my appreciation for quality work.
